Testimonials
A friend of ours hired Marty to design a major addition to an older home. We were very impressed with how the design and details of the new portions 'fit' the style of the original structure, while incorporating modern elements for function and liveability. So, we asked Marty to design the remodel of our modest-sized kitchen space, also in an older home. Marty brought his considerable expertise to our project, and helped us in every way an architect can help. Marty met with us several times, to understand what we thought was important, to explain what was possible and to make helpful and important suggestions. Marty examined and measured every conceivable dimension to input into his CAD software, rendered a series of draft plans that included lighting and cabinetry, brought in a structural engineer, and came up with a final plan for permits/construction that moved or removed an interior flue, doors and walls, created more space and a more open space, improved the work spaces and 'traffic flow', brought more light into what had been a fairly dark northwest-facing room, and also changed a roof line and cleaned up a cluttered and clumsy rear exterior facade. The plans were so clear and complete our contractor and subcontractors literally found no problems with them during the construction process. We are very happy with the results. In short, I would hire Marty again in a heartbeat, and highly recommend Marty if you are planning on building or remodeling
We worked with Marty for our kitchen remodel and planning of a basement remodel. He was great every step of the way. He worked with (and dramatically improved upon) the aesthetic of our home and brought in design elements that were important to us. During design, he brought up several practical considerations that didn't occur to us. Our GC and subcontractors were all complimentary of the level of detail of his plans. We will be working with him on our future projects.
We greatly enjoyed working with Marty. He was able to really understand our goals and bring the vision to fruition. He took the little bits and pieces of things we identified as important and created the perfect living space for our family. Everything turned out more beautifully than we could have dreamed. Marty was able to make solid recommendations and helped keep us focused. We would love to work with him again and highly suggest his expertise to anyone we know!
I really enjoyed my experience with Marty. He created plans for a substantial remodel to my 1892 Dutch Colonial home. I had a lot of ideas that were non-traditional and Marty worked hard to understand my vision. He listened carefully, offered numerous options and met with me many times, redesigning sometimes in the moment so I could try out an idea and see how it would work.
Fantastic experience working with Marty. While I had a vision, Marty provided the expert guidance and assistance to bring that vision to reality. I have a rather strong point of view and opinion on things, and Marty exhibited tremendous patience during the various iterations of the plans for the expansion and isolated remodeling of my home
My wife and I worked with Marty on a small mudroom/covered porch addition to our home. This was the first project we've tackled in any home and Marty was extremely helpful guiding us through each part of the process and taking extra time to explain the "why" behind each step. His design was exactly what we were looking for - very functional and it matched seamlessly with the existing style of our home
My wife and I worked with Marty to completely renovate our 1910 Craftsman house. From fully reconfiguring the stairs, to optimizing the flow of the main level, to maximizing storage space in the master bathroom, Marty thought through every detail big and small. He was very patient with us through rounds of feedback, met with us at off-hours to accommodate our work schedules, and brought a ton of peace of mind to first-time-renovators.
Our contractor pointed out that Marty’s architectural plans are the most thorough and detailed of any architect they work with! The space turned out better than we ever could have imagined, and we are so happy. No matter what you have in mind for your build, Marty will give you several excellent options and will be there for you the entire time.
From our preliminary meeting until completion Marty was precise and prompt with communications and design. He worked closely with our contractor and made the process easy. I absolutely recommend him from projects small to very large. His work speaks for itself and I am proud of our home. I consider Marty a friend after our time working on our home.
Working with Marty was a pleasure. He's a great listener and quickly understood what we were trying to accomplish. His attention to detail came through in his design, but it was his counsel as we worked through the pricing phase that I greatly appreciated. He helped us prioritize to keep the parts of our project intact that meant the most to us as costs escalated beyond our budget. Can't recommend him enough!
We just completed a fairly complicated project - we physically moved a 3200 sq ft house and then built an age in place smaller house/ADU on the vacated land. We are happy with the design, the process and the communications! Marty did a good job navigating the permit process and helping us settle on a design that would meet our needs and that could be built on time and on budget.
Marty immediately saw the charm of our 1920’s Craftsman style house as well as the problems. An oversized island crowded the kitchen. The second floor had a totally oddball layout that wasted space. But maybe worst of all was the main staircase which was claustrophobic, narrow and steep. We asked for a complete reimagining of the space and Marty proposed a brilliant plan.
Marty was so professional, insanely organized and meticulously detail oriented with such a vast understanding for space and how people live. This was a very extensive remodel that took 9 months to complete: we moved the entire staircase from the middle of the house to the back, opened up the dining room to the kitchen in a new open floor plan and we completely torn the upstairs down to the studs and pushed the dormers out and created a very unique floor plan that maximized space in every inch of the house and we added a 3rd bedroom thanks to Marty's configuration.
Buckenmeyer Architecture is rooted in collaborative, client-centered design work that is both skilled and responsive. Marty’s impressive portfolio demonstrated that he possessed the experience and skill to navigate the intricacies of an extensive remodel. As we dove into the design process, Marty sought visionary input and compiled a variety of general design concepts. With each step of the preliminary design, he incorporated our feedback and wishes, seeking a concept that incorporated our interests in balancing function, style, and cost. Marty also demonstrated a willingness to offer his own input in regard to both structural and design layout. Combined, these elements helped us hone our focus and develop a well-thought design that meets our needs and fits with the existing architecture of our home.
Marty is a wonderful architect that is a pleasure to work with. He has great ideas, listens well, and is thorough. He helped make the remodel process very smooth and his ideas contributed a lot to the final outcome and success of the remodel. He has great expertise in the area. We had a lot of structural work involved in our remodel and he came up with a great set up plans that was easy for the contractors to follow . He worked well with the contractors and was available for any questions that arose. We are so happy with the final outcome of our project. We highly recommend him and would definitely use him for future projects.
Marty was a pleasure to work with. He did an amazing job of making spaces in our house that functioned like a modern house, but fit in with the historic nature of our home. He attended to little details I never would have thought of, that turned out to be super important. And he did all of that while listening carefully to what we said and incorporating everything that was important to us. The builders regularly commented on how easy his drawings were to work with, since he had carefully attended to every detail. He was warm, friendly, and easy to talk to throughout the whole process. I unequivocally recommend Marty.
Buckenmeyer Architecture provided a quality design for our basement remodel that was in step with our vision, design preferences, and requirements for our new space. Upon completion of construction, the design and plans Buckenmeyer Architecture provided met every expectation and hope we had. The level of service and care Mr. Buckenmeyer provided throughout the process was excellent.
We hired Marty Buckenmeyer to draft plans for our house remodel, a project that included the creation of an open floor plan for the kitchen, family and dining areas as well as the laundry room. Marty was a great thought partner to work with. We liked the approach of submitting different scenarios, and we ended using components of each to come up with the final layout. Marty is easy to work with, was very attentive to our needs and lifestyle to customize the perfect plans for us. Would hire him again in a heartbeat!
We have been very pleased with the architect services of Marty Buckenmeyer. We initially interviewed three architectural firms and chose Marty because he quickly grasped what we were interested in, made excellent suggestions that we would never have thought of, and made us feel that we were exploring things together. He came up with a design which matches the 1953 era house in such a way that most visitors don't know that we significantly added and upgraded space. He was particularly reliable in working through several site and structural challenges. If you are looking for an architect who combines artistry, economy, and function - he is the one.
Marty was a delight to work with on several home remodeling projects. I have an older home in which I wanted to remodel a bathroom and a bedroom, change some lighting, and upgrade a stairway for safety concerns. Marty was a good listener and understood what my goals were for the various projects. He was creative in finding solutions that fit with my lifestyle and my budget. He found ways to fit changes into the basic structural components of my home which greatly reduced the potential cost of the remodel. Marty was totally reliable and always met deadlines. I would highly recommend Marty.
Marty loves cooking and had an incredible knowledge of how to layout a kitchen efficiently. We're thrilled with how the kitchen turned out and love cooking for small groups of friends. He helped us choose materials that would be cohesive and walk the line between modern and the original character of our house. We can't imagine the kitchen turning out any better.
Marty was the architect for the recently completed major remodel of the main floor of our home (kitchen, bathroom, hallway, coat closet/built-ins, and master closet). Marty was so easy to work with through every phase of our project, and we would give him our highest recommendation. He was patient with us as we took our time determining exactly what we wanted to do with our space, and each iteration of drawings made clear how well he listened to what we wanted and needed from our space.
Marty Buckenmeyer designed the plans for a pretty major remodel for our 1925 house. We had our basement finished, including adding a half bath; kitchen remodeled, full bathroom added on third floor and brand new stairways to both floors. Marty came to us with ideas and options for everything!
On top of the excellent work Marty is a super nice, easy going guy. He really listened to what we wanted and turned our ideas into the plans for our dream home. He is organized, on time and always made us feel like we were his #1 priority.
Marty is THE guy I turn to and recommend to my customers when they want to create spaces that are fresh and new but respectful of the "era" of their homes. He has a keen eye and can quickly visualize how to transform a space. His ideas are solid, the details subtle and the spaces truly buildable. I’d highly recommend him, you wont be disappointed.
We wanted to express our gratitude for the wonderful service Marty Buckenmeyer of Buckenmeyer Architecture provided my wife and me during the initial stages of our residential home remodel. It was important to us to maintain the original appeal and charm of our 1928 house yet bring in new life to the kitchen and basement.
Marty Buckenmeyer did a fantastic job. At our original meeting he took notes and measurements on our existing house. He listened to everything we wanted to accomplish. A week later he had created a scale model of our original house and three possibilities for our remodel. All three would accomplish our goals in different ways.
After we picked one design, Marty then helped us to develop our plans down to the finishes. When we hired a contractor we were able to hand him a very detailed plan for what we wanted. The level of detail made the process of hiring a contractor and working with him as he constructed our new kitchen as smooth as it could possibly be.
It was great to work with Marty on our house remodel. Through a few design studies informed by rough contractor estimates, Marty helped us focus on what was the most feasible/affordable project to help our house reach its potential. Marty then developed a multitude of options for our project and brought many great ideas we hadn’t considered before. These ideas helped to really tie the space together, add more light, and retain the character of our 90+ year old bungalow – all priorities for us. We ended up with an amazing kitchen, additional bedroom, larger living space, and much more functional layout. We would highly recommend working Marty based on our experience.
Having had fairly extensive experience in working with Architects on commercial projects for my business I was quit sure I knew what we wanted when designing a small addition/ADU for our house. We had somewhat modern sensibilities and ideas for a project to be added to a traditional Sellwood home. What we have now is exactly that, a modern addition that blends very well with the home it is attached too. Marty is a good listener and took those ideas and then gave us something beyond the limits of what we had in mind. We appreciated Marty's ability to bring his creative designs into a practical budget. Highly recommended.
Marty Buckenmeier was a great fit for our project, our budget and the architectural aspirations we had for our remodel. He provided us designs at varying levels of cost and complexity, since we did not know how much remodels can cost. He worked with us to address our most important priorities first, and suggested professionals we could work with to get the work done. Finally, he is a member of our community with kids of his own. It seemed to us that he understood where we were coming from and where we wanted to go with our 1920s bungalow home.
We have been working with Marty on a large renovation project for our house/garage. He has been wonderful to work with in every way. His designs and ideas are creative, thoughtful, and insightful. Even though we are quite indecisive, he has been amazingly patient with us. We've never felt rushed. He has gently led us forward with our project. We would recommend him without reservation.
